Balsa, ash, willow... Pine is alright if it's really dry. There are several types of wood that don't have a sticky sap.

I gotta say that even though the pine sap was a problem -- burning it smelled soooo goooood. *laughing*

Thank you! Woodburning is really awesome... You can buy wood from places like Michael's or other craft stores, as well as the tool for it. It's a "knife" of sorts (some of them have a blunt point instead of a knife) that heats up red-hot. You just draw on the wood like you would with a pen on paper. The best thing to do is draw your design on the wood and just trace over it with the woodburner. From there, you can do light shading and such. The woodburners sold at Michael's and other craft stores are around $20 and are about the size of a large screwdriver. I find them to be kinda clumsy, but they are great for starting out and finding out if it's your "thing" or not. Technically, you can start learning to do woodburning for about $25. They actually sell kits at craft stores that have the woodburner, patterns to practice with and some wood for $20 to $40. Then, you just use some woodstain to give the wood some colour and a clear coat to protect your work! It's a pretty nifty artform!
