To be honest, I don't know exactly what I do to get the background to come out right. I guess somehow I am getting the perfect amount of water or something. I usually paint wet on dry -- but the backgrounds I go for are wet on wet in an attempt to get a bokeh effect. (I find backgrounds to be the most stressful part of the painting for me.)

Speaking of backgrounds, I ordered some masking fluid and thought I would give that a try. I'm hoping I haven't made a horrific mistake. LOL I've never used it even though I've always wanted to. I've heard both positive and negative things about it... The part that stresses me out about the background is that I'm trying to paint in all the little crevices before the water dries and I lose my chance at the effect I'm aiming for. I also have a really bad habit of painting the background last instead of first.

Have you used masking fluid? Got any tips? LOL
